John Julian Handmade Bowl Mortar and Pestle
Named as one of 'The decade's design classics', by The Sunday Times, the sculptural shapes of the pestle and mortar are hand-thrown in small batches, and the unglazed vitrified finish makes it a real tactile pleasure to use. It has a generous sized bowl mortar, adapted for pastes, sauces and pestos. For best results, use the pestle with a rocking motion. John Julian Pestle and Mortars make the ideal gift for foodies, chefs and design lovers.
Please note these pieces are individually hand made, there may be some slight variation in size and detail.
The Porcelain Bowl Mortar with Ball Pestle is currently made to order.
They are easily cleaned in soapy water with a soft cloth or sponge.
- Both Mortar and Pestle are hand thrown individually
- Mortar: Approximately 23cm wide x 6cm high x 4.5cm deep
- Pestle: 12cm high
Nigel Slater uses an early version of the large porcelain Spear Pestle and Bowl Mortar which he first bought from John Julian as a one-off piece. Our new Bowl Pestle and Mortar has been redesigned from this one-off original.
As each piece is made by hand there will sometimes be some slight variation in colour and size, but we see this as part of their individual character and charm.
John Julian is a pottery studio and workshop based in rural Wiltshire, U.K.
The workshop was set up by sculptor and designer Julian Sainsbury in 2013 after he became disheartened with the restrictions of conventional mass manufacturing. We produce handmade luxury tableware, serveware and kitchenware, made in small batches by skilled potters.
